How to create a Venn Diagram

Make sure you already have a new LifeMap file open.

Select "Open Venn DiagramMaker..." from the "Concepts" menu.

You will see the following window.

Enter a Title for each of your two topics, as well as a title for items which belong to both topics (the overlap). Enter concepts that belong only to Topic 1, only to Topic 2, and to both topics in their respective fields. Each new line will become a concept.

We recommend that you use the "Use Case-sensitive Borders" setting, and make sure all of your concepts start with a Capital letter. LifeMap will group the concepts in each topic by the color of the concept's border. Link words do not have borders, so they would be difficult to use in Venn Diagrams. (Also, using the "Make Basic Concepts" setting will make all concepts bold with a fancy border. If you like this result, let us know. Otherwise, we are going to fix it in the next version.)

Click "Create Venn Diagram".

Your LifeMap file should now look something like the figure below.

Click "Activate a Theme". You will now see a dialogue box asking you to choose a topic to activate.

You will then be reminded to use black pixels to set your theme color, followed by the color selection window.

Making sure you are setting the black pixels, click on a color, and then click "Done". The color that will be used is the color shown in the dots around the "Done" button.

Repeat this process for Topic 2 and the Overlap. Your LifeMap file will now look something like the figure below.

Drag the concepts so that they look something like the figure below. If you can't drag them, you probably need to reselect the Concept Selector Tool from the "Edit" menu (Command-J).

Select the fancy border around the Title for Topic 1 and drag it so that it encircles the concepts for Topic 1, and the topics for the Overlap. Then, while the fancy border is still selected, go to the "Styles" menu and select "Fill Pattern > Transparent".

Repeat this step for the Title for Topic 2.

You have now completed your Venn Diagram, which should look something like the figure below.

You can also format your Venn Diagram so that it looks like this. You may need to select the Title for the Overlap and resize it so that fits inside the middle part of the Venn Diagram.

If you want to create a Venn Diagram with more than two topics, go back to the VennDiagramMaker window, remove the old titles and concepts, enter new titles and concepts and create them in the same LifeMap file.

You can also create concept maps inside of Venn Diagrams.
